Training report: Questions and Answers

Drills to warm up Half guard pass Half guard sweep Side control escape Triangle Triangle escape This topic complete our first cycle of the semester. I love this topic as it is an opportunity for the students to ask questions. In a way, it is a way to gauge how much the students have learned for the past 11 weeks. Also, it is a way to see if we are missing anything in our training program. The questions of the day revolved around the position Mount. It was asked by a new student. We are covering the topic of the mount next week. However, I decided to oblige and we covered this topic. Mount escape On the other side of the mats, the competitors drilled their game plan for this Saturday competition. They sparred 3 minutes stand up and 3 minutes ground. Training concluded with situational rolling from mount and normal rolling. Thursday topic will be Questions and Answers as well, but we will have our last NOGI training for the season. Se

New bjj concept: free roller

Josh invited to like a Facebook page called free roller Gold Coast.  Great idea.  Hope it picks around the world and people can train outside their gyms.  When are we starting free roller auckland?

To compete or not to compete, that is the question?

Competition time is always a strange situation for a club.  It creates excitement as it is a break from the monotony of training.  Competition is great otherwise we just will be sparring each other's. Such type of training is not healthy as it tends to grind people spirit and it is boring as we already knew the pecking order after a couple of class anyway.  So where does  the non competitors stand?  They make up for the majority of BJJ.  Looks at the competition circuit in nz and you  can tell that only marketing or attracting competitors to fill up your club is a route to disaster.  Medals might great for advertising but the limited number of competitors will not make enough revenue to keep a club alive.  It is interesting to see that such trend has changed throught the years.  Back in the days we were all about putting the smack down on other martial artists.  Then it became a sport with rules.  Nowadays, it is about the lifestyle as we need to maximise numbers of students and re

Training report: Turtle and Rubber Guard

We started a new 2 weeks/drills It covers the last 2 weeks topics and follows our drills principles. It should consist of 1 sweep, 1 guard pass, 1 takedown and 1 submission. 1/2 guard sweep 1/2 guard pass Triangle. We will add the throw on Thursday. Serge taught the turtle position to the beginners while Stu taught the rubber guard to the more advanced students. That is correct: rubber guard!!! All the planets were aligned correctly and Stu decided to teach the dark art of 10th planet Jiu Jitsu. We had to covered this topic due to the nogi comp and we expect some competitors using this specific nogi guard. We might cover guillotine on Thursday as nogi comps are usually guillotine city. Technical rolling from turtle and rubber guard. Takedown matches and then normal rolling.

Training program for March and April

http://www.aucklandbjj.com/p/bjj-training-program-for-second.html

Training report: Internal NOGI competition

To prepare for the NZ Grappler NOGI event on the Saturday 28 March, we decided to have a FREE internal nogi competition. 9 students competed and we split them into 2 groups (heavy and light). Mario and Igor referees the matches. So that is great to see seniors students taking a role into referring. The turn out was not that great and it might be due that some students are not all that keen to compete. Therefore it is important as a club to caters for all our members: competitors and non-competitors. We will be splitting the class accordingly for the next couple of weeks until the competition. The best news is that no one got injured and that is the most important. PRIZES: Jose won the heavy division Igo won the light division Andree won the random prize. They all get to pick an item of their choice from our online shop. https://aucklandbjj.printmighty.co.nz/ https://aucklandbjj.printmighty.co.nz/products

ROLL: Jiu-Jitsu in SoCal

This is a great video that covers many topic in BJJ: the old school vs the new school, the arrival of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in the USA, Rorion Gracie, the Gracie challenge, the first non Brazilian black belts, IBJJF rules, the fact that BJJ is now only train to defeat BJJ and no longer to defeat other martial arts, the move of major tournaments to California from Brasil, the new generation of BJJ GIs like Shoyoroll and much more.  A must watch for BJJ fans.

UNIFORM POLICY: NZ Grappler NOGI competition

You will need to wear a rash guard that has at least 10% of your color belt and a black short for the next NZ Grappler nogi competition. http://us6.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e4ce560b360f74883351980b8&id=36c8222d36 "Shirt of elastic fabric (clings to body) at a length that covers the shorts’ waist band, of black or white color, and displaying at least 10% of the color of the rank (belt) to which the athlete belongs. Shirts that are 100% the color of the rank (belt) the athlete belongs to are also acceptable." You do not need to buy an expensive rash guard from the internet etc.. This is NOT acceptable as the body as to be white or black and NOT other color like blue Just buy a rash guard that is of the color of your belt. So if you are a white belt, just buy a cheap white rash guard. Blue belt, buy a blue rash guard etc.. Problem solved. Or you could buy the black rash guard that NZ grappler is selling for NZD 60 on the day on the c
