Last week, we started adding new drills of mount escape and turtle reversal. We have been drilling the half guard drills for over a month for warm up and it is time to move on to something. The topic of the week was the mount. Tuesday was mount escape (upa) and the high mount escape. While Thursday was arm bar from the mount. Situation rolling and tachi waza and then newaza. .

How to classify guard passes into 5 motions

From a post of sherdog grappling Forum written Uchi Mata. With some minor variations, I think you can reduce almost all passing motions down to these 5: Knee slide Leg weave Leg redirection, e.g. torreando or leg drag Long step/back step Stack Knee slide Leg Drag Long Step Pass The Stack Leg Weave

Nogi National Competition

Just a few notes after an exciting day at the NZ grappler event. Dom is a National Champion.  He won bronze medal at his first competition. Then he won silver medal at his second competition. Finally got his gold medal at his third competition. At a young age of 14 years, Dom has a great future in Jiu Jitsu competition. We are contemplating at promoting to orange belt soon! Laurance won silver in his division and Webber won a bronze medal as well. Patrick won his first match but lost his second match. However, He did well for his first competition in NZ. He is considering losing weight and enter a lower weight category for the next event of the NZ grappler Regional GI competition on 14 May 2016. So 3 medals out of 4 competitors. Great result and no one got injured (which is more important than the medals). We will be also hosting our Master competition on Saturday 16 April. https://www.facebook.com/events/767249986739792/ http://www.aucklandbjj.com/2016/03/aucklan

Training report: Questions and Answers

This week is the opportunity for the students to ask questions and we answer them. As well on the side, the competitors got to drill their moves for the nogi competitors under Igor supervision. Some of the questions were what to do when the person goes on their side to avoid the pin, guillotine. I am adding a video of triangle defense as well. On Thursday, we taught IBJJF competition to the whole class. Next week, we will be doing competition training, single leg takedown and arm drag. See you on the mats

Saturday training

This saturday, I will be attending bjj open mats at city bjj from 10 am. You can also attends ben class at the epsom dojo. His judo beginner class starts at 10.30 am. Have a good weekend.

New Incentive program for 2016

1 stripe for 6 competition wins. Minimum ibjjf time as usual. To be confirmed

$100 challenge

A win is a win. Winning by points is as good as a submission. However, to spice things up for the nogi nationals, you will go in draw to win $100 everytime you get a submission. Of course, it only applies to our Auckland Bjj club members.

Topic for the week

For the competitors: you can wear nogi uniform for Tuesday (even if it is tradionaly a gi class). We will cover ibjjf competition rules, game plan and lot of drilling. We will have our usual 1 hour of sparring. For the beginners and non competitors: questions and answers. It is your opportunity to ask a questions. We will answer by explaning the concept and drill the techniques. We plan to cover 3-4 questions per class. It is also a good way to get a feedback on what we have not taught for the last 12 week program. See you on the mats.

Training report: Serge goes to Judo training

I want to learn Judo and will alternate between attending the beginner Judo class on Saturday that are taught by Judo black belt Ben Uy and BJJ open mats held at city bjj. Ben has 15 week program to introduce students to Judo.  Each topic will be repeated 3 times per year and I will blog about this unique blue print later on. It consisted of throws and ground techniques. We did a couple of rounds of newaza and the rest was tachiwaza. I gassed out on the Tachiwaza which means I need more takedown sparring. Facts of the day: not wearing a rash under the gi is weird and the higher belts have to face the road when bowing before sparring (maybe a tradition we could start at AKLBJJ. Overall, I really enjoyed getting thrown around by sparring partners that were smaller than me. Check out  http://www.judokong.com/  for more details. Some of the techniques that Ben taught today:

Training report: Turtle

This week, we cover the topic of the turtle position. The warm up drills were technical stand up, half guard pass and half guard sweep. As Stu is in Japan for one month, Igor and Serge shared the teaching responsibilities. Throw of the month is hip throw. Some of the techniques taught for the week topic were reversal from turtle, clock choke, bow and arrow choke from turtle, hell choke, back take from turtle. We had over 20 students during the class so we had to to only 12 people rolling at once. Next week the topic is Questions and Answers.  We will also cover competitions rules for the NZ grappler competition. Also, we closed our new intake of new students as we currently are full and need to concentrate on the existing students and ensure safety on the mats as well. Thanks you for the support
