Graduation day: Tuesday 5 July

We traditionally have 2 graduations per year. We do not have like to waste time. Our graduation is very quick as we do not want to sacrifice an entire training session. So the students just get to demonstrate a couple of techniques. It is not a test as it is just an occasion for them to shine and show their skills. Then we will just roll as usual. No gaunlet for the kids. I am super happy to see students moving up the ranks and hope later on that they will good ambassador of the martial art and sport. Now our standards are very simple. For adults, 6 months training equals a stripe. After 4 stripes which is the maximum, then you are due for the next belt. So 2.5 years per belt. 10 years to black belt. Of course, they are exceptions to the rules. I think the blue belt is less than 2.5 years by looking at our average. You hear horrible stories about some schools delaying promotions for many reasons. Not sure if it is a good thing or it proves that their teach

Training report: Mount

It is the most dominant position in BJJ and rewarded by 4 points in sport rules. It is also the first topic of our 12 week program. Serge taught the fundamentals of the mount position. Also taught 2 mount escapes. On Thursday, we continued on the same techniques and Dom demonstrated the S mount with a nice drill of arm bar and S mount retention to triangle. The advantage of having a 15 years old student to demonstrate the S mount is it encourages the adults to learn such moves which could be considered difficult or more advance if taught by a black belt. Situation rolling from the mount as usual. We are big on situational rolling as it is important to pratice the topic of the week. Now on the other side of the mats, Igor led the blue belts into drilling their techniques. It is important to let advanced students drills their techniques. As an instructor, I feel that teaching less is MORE. Trust your advanced students and give them time to drill their

Topic of the week: mount

Training report: Questions and Answers

This is probably the most interesting topic of our program. It is not really because I get bored of teaching the other topics, the Q & A gives me good feedback to how much does our program covers. This is an chance to cover some topic that I did not cover through our 11 week program. Some of the questions were:  lapel guard and bull fighter guard pass, butterfly guard pass with the terere guard pass Next we are startling all over again with the topic mount.

Thursday training

Good training tonight with questions and answers. I will blog on the weekend to cover the questions: lapel guard and bull fighter guard pass, butterfly guard pass with the terere guard pass. Next week is the start of a new rotation. So it starts with mount. For the blue belts, you can drill techniques if you choose to. Igor Goulart will take the drills. Otherwise, thank you for the support on a cold Auckland night. Don't forget you have 2 options if you want to train on Saturday: beginner judo in Epsom from 11 am and BJJ open mats at city BJJ from 10 am. See you on the mats.

Inter club competition: City BJJ vs Auckland BJJ

This is a great opportunity to compete in a friendly environment. When: Saturday 02 July 2016 What time: From 10 AM. Name of location: City Kick boxing Where: 14 West Street, New Town, Auckland, 1010 Cost: Free (for our club members) Please give your details if you want you to compete as we need make some match up. Tell Serge your details: weight etc.

Questions & Answers

We are now completing our 12 weeks program and our last topic: questions and answers. This the opportunity for the students to ask specific questions we might have missed during the last 11 weeks. It is great to receive feedback and see if we need to adjust the content of our teaching structure. Now for the more advanced students, you are free to drill techniques instead if you do not want to participate in the Q&A. Totally understandable as I will be addressing the questions of the less experienced students first. As usual, I am always open to questions during Rollins times, after a class, before a class and at open mats. See you on the mats.

Training report: Turtle position

This the last position of our training program. Next week we are doing Questions and Answers when the students get ask questions and we answers them. Turtle does not give you points in fact you give away an advantage to your opponent when you turtle to avoid a guard pass. We taught a basic back take from turtle. Instead of teaching reversals from turtle, we taught more submissions instead: Clock chocke, bow and arrow from turtle, darce chocke and hell choke. See you on the mats.

Weekend training

Get in some training on your Saturday morning with Open Mats at City BJJ from 10am and Begginers Judo with Ben Uy at Epsom Dojo from 11am #Oss #AKLBJJ 👊🏽👍🏽

A leopard can't change its spots

Last week-end, I blogged about how to implement your game. But I forgot to mention about the fact that it is really difficult or almost impossible to change your style as it is linked to your personality. Hence, the title of this blog: a leopard can't change its spots. What it means? Look at what you like to do in BJJ and be good at it. If you like to be a top player, learn some takedowns, guard passes etc.. If you like to be a guard player, learn how to pull and play guard and be good at it. Of course, there is some exceptions to the rules but after meeting and training with people over the years, they do not really change. However, I do not think you should force smaller training partners to only be guard players if you prefer to be a guard passer. BUT You can improve your skills by choosing to get into a game plan that you do not prefer. For example, I love de la riva guard and use it all the time. But when it comes to pass de la riva guard, I am still stru

Training report: 1/2 sweep

This week was the completion of our half guard program. We did half guard pass last week and we concentrate on the sweeping aspect of the half guard game. On Tuesday we covered the fundamentals on what to do if you lost the "battle" of the underhoook and you are getting crossed face. On Thursday, we repeated Tuesday techniques but also introduced the concept of knee shield and covered some new sweeps like old school and plan B. They are actually terminology used by Eddie Bravo and his 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system. Tuesday was massive class with 30 people on the mats and Thursday was a bit smaller with just 20 on the mats. Because they were so many people on the mats on Tuesday, we end rolling for 75 minutes instead of our usual 60 minutes. Open mats on Saturday was fun as always. Getting to meet their new white belts and it was great to see Patrick and Adam training today. They both usually work on Saturday and they surely appreciated the rolling with new people.

Reason why you should compete at the nz grappler event

A big thank you to Krissy Hunter for organising 3 "friendly" matches for our little Lucy at the last regional competition. Lucy has been training for 3 months and did not have anyone in her division. Krissy went out of her way to ensure that Lucy had an opportunity to get some experience on that day. She learned a lot and is very motivated for the next competition. Once again. Thank you.
