Training Program for the next month

Learning and teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is hard enough by itself. At Aucklandbjj.com, we like to simplify the teaching process by breaking down our classes into position instead of techniques. This is the training program for the next month. We will still have drills for warm up. One throw per class 30 minutes situational rolling. Sparring stand up and ground. Does you academy tells you in advance what topic and techniques they will cover in the next month? Why not? Would you trust your kids with a teacher if he he just turned up and taught some random stuff with no program? No!

Training hEport: Berimbolo

After last week competition, we are going back to our normal training program where we cover on throw per class and one ground topic. Last Tuesday was hip throw nogi and Knee on the Belly (with 3 subs). Last night (Thursday night) was uchimata and De La Riva guard / berimbolo (guard sweeps) You will need to learn Berimbolo if you want your 3 stripes on your white belt. Berimbolo is just basically the continuation from de la riva guard. Instead of taking the back, you keep the same grips and invert instead. Why is it so popular? Because there is no counter to the berimbolo as far as I know. Why is it hated? Because people hate what they don't know. Why is it revolutionary? Because it is going against the traditional style of take down, guard pass and submission after achieving dominant top position. You can read more info on this controversial topic. http://www.aucklandbjj.com/2013/06/double-guard-pull-anyone.html     ...

Training Competition: Read the rules

As we are a week away from the competition, you need to read the rules. Even if you do not compete, you need to understand the rules. There is also a good video from Felipe Costa that you can watch. I will print the rules and will go over them for the next 2 classes as well.  Registration is closing soon: Until 11:59 pm Wednesday 19 February 2014 Adults: $60 Kids: $50  http://nzgrappler.co.nz/category/news/  You can find the rules on the below link: http://ibjjf.org/rules/ Do not get DQ because you do NOT want to spend some time reading and watching a video. Learn the rules of the sport you want to compete. Even if you are not a competitor, we need to understand what is legal, what is illegal and how the points system works.

Best you tube instructional videos part One: Kurt Osiander top ten videos

That is correct, you read it. This is my first post on the best youtube BJJ instructional videos. Most BJJ instructors do not want you to learn from youtube or any videos for the matter. Why is that? Because they will run our of a job and will have to get a normal 8-5 employment like the rest of us. When it comes to youtube videos, Kurt Osiander is my favourite. He is a Ralph Gracie Black Belt and is sponsored by Shoyoroll. He is abrupt, old school, rude, not PC. Basically, he is opposite of the new generation of BJJ Black Belt. Some of his famous quotes are: Kurt Osiander quotes “I like to travel and meet people all over the world- and choke them” About the 50/50 guard “If do it wrong, you’re getting fucked. If you do it right, you’re doing the fucking!” “you fucked up a long time ago” and “keep your ass down, this is San Francisco” “I have something to show you guys and don’t worry it’s not my dick” “Fucking white belts…” “Fuck berimbolos!” “All whi...

The wolves of Jiu Jitsu

I just finished watching the wolf of Wall Street. It was a good movie. It got me thinking about Jiu Jitsu and the people involved in the sport. BJJ is becoming popular and lot of schools are opening all around the world. Last year, a scandal erupted with a famous gym owner in the USA that made the headlines due to his student’s indiscretions. While you cannot blame him for what his students did, the public suddenly gave the revelations of his shady past. What intrigued me the most was he manipulated people around him to become famous and popular.  His strategy was very similar to the person in the movie; he treats students as marks and just wants their money. He hides behind the nice image of a martial artist but really he wants their hard earned cash. Some of the strategies were to get them in the gym and use hard sales strategies to close the deal. It starts with nice website with special promotions and then offers a cheaper deal to f...

Former Miss USA trains BJJ and MMA

Whitney Miller, the 2012 Miss United States pageant winner, has taken up Brazilian jiu-jitsu and placed second in her first tournament, just three months into training. Miller attended last month’s UFC 168 in December to watch Ronda Rousey defend her women’s bantamweight title against Miesha Tate in Las Vegas. And she’s thinking about making the transition into MMA. “It’s been talked about,” Miller told FOX Sports. “It’s a definite possibility.” Miller, 24, has always competed in sports since she was a girl – from soccer to track and field to professional wake surfing. She saw BJJ as “one of the hardest things to do” and wanted the challenge.  http://msn.foxsports.com/ufc/haymaker/former-miss-united-states-takes-up-bjj-could-transition-to-mma-011614

Policeman use Judo to neutralise an attacker in Hamilton, New Zealand

The NZ police force has a NZ champion judoka in their force throwing an attacker in Hamilton. Nice Story! "They picked the wrong cop. A Hamilton police officer who was attacked outside the Hamilton East drugs shop is a judo black belt. Witnesses said members of an unruly mob taunted him, calling him Jackie Chan. They did not know who they were dealing with. Constable Sean Choi was on the beat outside synthetic cannabis dealer U njoY on Grey St during a tense and violent Tuesday. Police said one of the shop's customers approached Choi and tried to pick a fight. He gave up on the first attempt yet returned minutes later and tried again. The man was arrested but another man allegedly joined the fray and jumped on Choi's back. Choi has been a member of the Metro Judo Club since he arrived in New Zealand from South Korea as a teenager. Head coach Terry Steenson said the alleged attacker was destined to take flight: "We move in ...

Training Report: 1/2 guard pass and pummelling from the clinch

We are back into our second weeks of training for the year.  Tuesday is Nogi training and Thursday is GI training. If you do not own a gi, you can still attend Thursday class. Please see the new link regarding the next competition.  http://www.aucklandbjj.com/2014/01/bjj-nogi-auckland-competition-22-feb.html  The topic of the day was top half guard.  The half guard game has developed dramatically through the year and it is no longer considered a transition position where people are stuck between closed guard and about getting their guard passed. Lot of people are developing their game around the half guard. It might not be the focus of some schools that believe one should not play open guard unless they have been forced to. IE closed guard is better. Stand up training was fighting for the  under hook from the clinch and a variation with a leg grab It is also know pummelling. Vital skills for grappling. ...
