Training Report: Uchimata and side control

Usual warm up and some berimbolo drills. Jordan (Judo black belt instructor) demonstrated Uchimata (European version) which is you turn uke around instead of hoping foward as the usual uchimata ken ken. Just in case you wonder, uke is the term used for the training partner you demonstrated the technique on. Ground topic of the day was side control and escapes. Couple of situation rolling from side control Training concluded with normal rolling.

Training Report: Kouchi Gari (small inner reap, Arm bar and BJJ grading (stripes)

To climb a mountain, you need to make your first step. In BJJ, getting your first stripe is always a memorable occassion. Congratulations to Webber and Jonathan! They are the first students to receive stripes at our new location in Epsom.

Training Report: Uchimata and Ko uchi Gari - Back Escape - Search of the picture for the billboard is over

Light warm up and stretches to ease back into training after last weekend competition. We work on Uchimata as our primary throw.   I like Uchimata a lot especially because you can use it to counter leg grab such as single leg. Uchimata seems to be difficult to finish as you can have to hop around on one leg forcing your opponent to lose balance. Such hop around is known the Ken Ken. I read that Ken Ken was supposed to be Can Can. You need to watch French Can Can at the Moulin Rouge to understand the analogy. If you are tired of doing the hop around, you can switch to Ko Uchi Gari or Tai Otoshi. Uchimata to Ko Uchi     Ko Uchi to Uchimata to see the difference        I prefer Ko Uchi Gari over the dreaded Tai Otoshi. The reason being that Tai Otoshi is usually applied with massive leg strike to uke knee instead of just blocking uke ankle. http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/taiotoshi.htm ...

Training Report - Judo trio throws and the forgotten Closed Guard With Overhook Lapel Grip

Drop Seo Nage is not that great for your knees Light warm up Fundamentals for the beginners The Trinity for the advanced students: It is the combination of 3 Judo techniques that Rodolfo like hitting at competition until the cows come home Drop seo Nage. Kouchi Gari Ouchi Gari I especially like the way he breaks the balance of the opponent by pulling so hard (also known as walking the dog). Breaking the balance is vital to set up a good throw, it is known as Kuzushi in Judo. The ground part of the class was the forgotten close guard with overhook lapel grip.   It is a great guard that can be use for nogi as well: keep the posture broken down, sweeps, omoplata, chokes, triangle and arm locks.
