I thought I will go into details about the event that Stu ran for our Junior squad hoping that it could
encourage and give ideas for other clubs to run BJJ competitions in the future.
Goals:
Have fun, encourage students to compete and keep it free.
Cost
It is usually the biggest factor.
In our case, we had a sponsor Barry Satchell consultants Limited.
With the sponsorship, we manage to cover some of the expenses.
Possibility to improve
Obtain more sponsors.
Venue
Our club.
By hosting it in our own location, we avoided leasing a site and having to move our own mats.
We have about 155 meters square of mats so we could run 2 matches at the same time.
We only had 10 plastics chairs and a few sofas.
Possibility to improve:
Renting more chairs for the next event.
Entry Fee
Free for participants and spectators.

Rules set:
We used submission only format with round robin.
Submissions only format makes less dramatic to run by not over complicating the matches with specific points systems that can be seen in IBJJF or SIJJF.
However, we still used the rules of IBJJF for the types of submissions allowed / penalties and illegal moves respective or ages and belt.
Possibility to improve:
Get more referees and officials involved and run a referee course before hand.
Trophies & Prices:
We just printed certificate instead of buying medals.
Future Kimono donated some prices.

get more sponsors on board
Software:
Smoothcomp.
It is pretty inexpensive like 1-2 dollars per participants and seems to work fine.
No more drawing draws on paper etc..
Participants:
We had participants from our club and Buckland Beach BJJ.
But also we had participants from program that our students are volunteering at local school such as Howick, De Lasalle, Marcelin and Onehunga.
Possibility to improve:
Get more participants and programs involved.
