This week, we are now completing one cycle of the training program. It concludes with a questions and answers. Students asked questions and we answer them. This is the last week of Nogi as well. We will only train in GI once the nogi comp is over. Part 2 of our self defence week for the beginners. Our nogi competitors and more advanced students were taught the single X guard. We had Mark from HQ as a guest instructor that specialise into the single X guard. Single X guard has been made popular by Marcelo Garcia and is very practical especially for Nogi. Competition time is always a strange situation for a club.  It creates excitement as it is a break from the monotony of training.  Competition is great otherwise we just will be sparring each other's. Such type of training is not healthy as it tends to grind people spirit and it is boring as we already knew the pecking order after a couple of class anyway.  So where does  the non competitors stand?  They make up for the majority of BJJ.  Looks at the competition circuit in nz and you  can tell that only marketing or attracting competitors to fill up your club is a route to disaster.  Medals might great for advertising but the limited number of competitors will not make enough revenue to keep a club alive.  It is interesting to see that such trend has changed throught the years.  Back in the days we were all about putting the smack down on other martial artists.  Then it became a sport with rules.  Nowadays, it is about the life...

We started a new 2 weeks/drills It covers the last 2 weeks topics and follows our drills principles. It should consist of 1 sweep, 1 guard pass, 1 takedown and 1 submission. 1/2 guard sweep 1/2 guard pass Triangle. We will add the throw on Thursday. Serge taught the turtle position to the beginners while Stu taught the rubber guard to the more advanced students. That is correct: rubber guard!!! All the planets were aligned correctly and Stu decided to teach the dark art of 10th planet Jiu Jitsu. We had to covered this topic due to the nogi comp and we expect some competitors using this specific nogi guard. We might cover guillotine on Thursday as nogi comps are usually guillotine city. To prepare for the NZ Grappler NOGI event on the Saturday 28 March, we decided to have a FREE internal nogi competition. 9 students competed and we split them into 2 groups (heavy and light). Mario and Igor referees the matches. So that is great to see seniors students taking a role into referring. The turn out was not that great and it might be due that some students are not all that keen to compete. Therefore it is important as a club to caters for all our members: competitors and non-competitors. We will be splitting the class accordingly for the next couple of weeks until the competition. The best news is that no one got injured and that is the most important. PRIZES: Jose won the heavy division Igo won the light division Andree won the random prize.
